Kaveri Trail - Half Marathon 2013 - Race Recap

Even though it has been over a week since I ran the Kaveri Trail Half Marathon 2013, I still cannot stop raving about the experience. The Kaveri trail is one of the most scenic marathon trails in this prt of the country. With the sound of singing birds, gurgling water, the chants of the field workers and the near perfect running weather that Bangalore offers, it became a must do after being initiated into the world of running races last year.

My training was quite consistent in the beginning but slacked quite badly after I was uprooted from my home, changed jobs and basically my world changed over night! The longest run I had been on was a 13k, while the Hal Higdon Plan stipulated that I run atleast a 16k as part of the training.

But I have been running for more than a year now, and the Scientist reassured my nervous self that I'd be ok once I reached the start line. The drive from Bangalore took nearly one a half hours. I woke up at 4 a.m. so that we'd reach the start line after I'd had enough time for a pee.

I warmed up and stretched. And was enjoying the experience of being amidst all those half marathoners and in complete awe of the full marathon runners! Imagine 42k on your two feet!

I must admit that the first few kms were tough for me - I was annoyed at myself for being so fat and felt that was slowing me down  lot. I felt fatigued easily - unlike how I usually felt strong and good during my practice runs. I was sure the lack of running during the preceeding two weeks was the one that was stunting me so badly! Then I saw people who looked much fitter and thinner than me also slowing down, struggling and walking. That when I decided to forgive myself and just run between the water stations.

At the 6k mark, I felt a strange pain in the deep seated muscles of my left hand. Its a pain I've never before experienced. I did some arm swings and rotations to ease it out and kept moving. I consciously took electrolyte at every water station and even cooled myself down by splashing water on my face, neck and hands. The weather was humid-hot and that made running the tough trail pretty hard. Lots of people walked and ran alternately. I kept going in the same way until I saw the 10k mark.

In my head I expected to turn around at 10k. But the turn around point was at 11.1k and that felt like the hardest 1.1k EVER!!! On the way back, it was more walking, though I felt a surge of strength from the 121 k mark till the 15k. After that, I was just counting down kms to finish line. I forgot about how slow I was. I just did what I could  ran/ walked. My feet were begging to be taken out of shoes.

The last 2-3 kms were treacherous. I was thinking that it would be the last time I'd ever do something this crazy. Then in the home stretch there were people cheering at every 100m point. And the thought of actually finishing it up fueled me till the finish point.

The good things were:

  • I did not cramp
  • no injury except knee pain which I felt for 2-3 after the race too
  • I did not faint/ vomit like many others
  • of course - that I finished
  • the awesome medal at the end!
The bad were:
  • I took more than 3 hrs to finish which I thought was embarassing
  • I walked wayyyyy!!! more than I expected to
  • by the end my feet were crying
But the best is - that I am contemplating running the Wipro Chennai Half Marathon in December this year - for better timing you see?

Kaveri Trail Half Marathon Finisher!

hey guys!!!

Zillions of apologies from me!

I've been grappling with tons of things lately- a new job (but that's a different post all together), a home still under renovation and the challenges  of managing a home (away from home) and a job in all in glory.

But the point of this post is - that I FINISHED the Kaveri Trail Half Marathon in 3:16:22.  That's 21.1 kms in a  timing I am kind of embarrassed about - because I walked much more than  I intended to, did not feel I was in the running zone at any point of time during the run, felt wayyy too fat! And basically did not even feel like a runner when I ran!!

Despite all the above, I still finished the race on Sunday, with minimal/ no injury except painful knees.

I want to do a full race recap and resume blogging very soon. That's a promise. What have you guys been upto?

Half Marathon Training - Week 8 Recap

I have officially signed up for the Kaveri Trail - Half Marathon to be held on 15th September 2013 at a very scenic location near Bangalore. It is known to be one of the finest trail races in this part of the world :) Anyone wants to run this as well? The registrations are fast closing!

I have been on a 13 week modified version of the Hal Higdon plan in preparation for the race. It requires 6 days of exercise and 1 day rest in a week. It also calls for atleast 3 running days - of which lately I have run only 2 a week. One is to be a long run, which I do on Sundays when other people want to kind of just chill out!!!

Week 8 - the workouts:

  • I exercised 6 out of 7 days - 3 days of carido ( 2 days running) and 3 days strength
  • The weekday run - a 7.2 km run - I was feeling pretty good!
  • The long run on Sunday a planned 13k was ruined by a very very painful metatarsal toe joint on the left foot. I still ran about 12k before the pain got unbearable.
  • I did 3 strength workouts including - JM's No More Trouble Zone, Yoga Melt Down and Level 2 of the 30 day shred
  • I am feeling really strong muscles
The food:

  • Even though I have not been able to run as frequently as before, I continued to eat slightly higher carb food - adding a cup of rice at lunch (sometimes even 2) and an added roti at dinner
  • Another reason I continued to eat like that is because of some stomach issues which I was having
  • There were also meals outside and ice cream in addition to some unnecessary chocolate - totally avoidable!
The weight

  • I have been weighing in around 77 kg - that means a gain of atleast 2 kg
  • More eating + more strength training + lesser running = weight gain! Boo!
  • Higher the weight = Slower running! Double boo!
The Pain:
  • Knee pain has been kept fairly at bay thanks to proper stretching
  • The new kid on the block is the pain below the toe :) and I am yet to see the doctor

Only 5 weeks left!

Half Marathon Training - Week 4 recap

Can you believe - time has flown so fast and I am already in the 5th week of half marathon training using the Hal Higdon Novice 1 Half Marathon Training Plan that I modified to suit my weekly schedules. I will be running the awesome Kaveri Trail  half-marathon distance i.e 13.1 miles a.k.a 21.1 kms (really?????)  in September this year. If I dwell too long on that distance, I might just have a panic attack, but yes unbelievable, right?

You can click here to see my training plan.. Here is last week's summary:

Workouts:

  • I did 6 out of 6 planned workouts. Only on Friday a 5.5k run was notched down to a 4k walk thanks to sleep deprivation & muscle fatigue cos I just could not get myself to run!
  • On the strength front I have been making small changes. I have added some body weight exercises - lunges, squats, free style exercises with the pilates ball and kettlebell.
  • Today I did a killer sequence of exercises. I will link up to that in my next post after assessing my pain level tomorrow!
  • Pump cant happen this month - the timing just does not suit me!!!

Food:

  • Unnecessary carbs - sweets, sugar, Pizza, buttermilk rice (to soothe my abused stomach) have found their way to my stomach!!!
  • I know I need to clamp down. I've said that many times last week, but it better happen soon!

Weight:

  • This morning the scale showed 76.4 a gain from the 75.something I was seeing last week. Time to cut out the rice again, I guess!

Pain:

  • Knee pain has returned!!! Ouch!! I better go back to knee strengthening exercises regularly!

You can read : Half Marathon Training week 3 recap here and click on the links in there to go back further and see how I progressed from running a 5k to a 10k!

Kaveri Trail Half Marathon - training to make a dream come true

This is the beginning of a new dream. I am nervous and unsure. Even worried - that I will not be successful. What if I fall? What if injure myself badly? What if I ultimately fail?

I never EVER thought, I'd dream a dream like this - the half marathon dream. Running 21.1k on a beautiful trail like the one the Kaveri Trail Marathon soil offers in an opportunity par excellence. Some of you may remember I ran the 10k last year and resolved then that I should atleast try the half, if not the full marathon!

So here I am. I've adapted the Hal Higdon plan to suit my schedule. You can find my training schedule here. Only the day before yesterday I ran a 6k route and felt fairly fine. So I'm going to take a deep breath, cross my fingers and get down to business!

I'm sure I'm going to need some hard lashes on days I want to be lazy, lots of encouragement, sensible eating (to avoid injury) and some hard talk to stay grounded. Making a plan is easy. Sticking with it is the hard part. Brace yourself and join me on my journey to fulfilling my dream of a half marathon!
