Saturday post - feeling low but sticking to SBD!

I usually don't post on Saturdays, but the last week I have been feeling a little blah! Some personal issues which make me really sad, have really been making the rounds and causing my system to be a little bogged down. Another reason is that PMS has played around with my mood. Also, I took the last three days off as I heeded the Scientist's advise to stay away from hard core exercise during my cycle. I have felt lately that I feel lost and dazed on days I don't exercise. I might be officially addicted to exercise!Who would have thought?

On the SBD (South Beach Diet) front, I did pretty good today, and my protein intake was finally up to the recommended level and calorie consumption was just 1500. I hope I can sustain this and see some good results by the end of two weeks.

Thanks to all those who left comments on my earlier post, for the support and prodding on. I am hoping I stay on track! I I feel more accountable now that more people are actually watching me. That sure is a positive side of blogging the numbers :)

Going back to how I began - Phase I, SBD!

I think I might just be done with staying around this weight. I know what works best for me and I am going to do the South Beach Diet - Phase 1 for the next two weeks. I know my timing may be a bit off because Diwali falls within that bracket, but I will deal with it then. I am done with weighing in at 79 kg! JUST SO DONE.

So I'm going to stock up on lentil supplies, veggies, mushrooms, tofu, low fat dairy and all. I begin from this evening meal. I am ready to get rid of the next 5 kilos!!!

Wish me luck! Anyone wants to join? I will keep this space updated!

On this morning - thoughts, things and a fear!

My alarm rang at 5 a.m this morning, like it does on every weekday morning. It basically means that if I do wake up at that ungodly hour, I will be able to sneak out to the gym/ finish my workout before the toddler awakes, come back in time to cook a decent breakfast and pack a healthy lunch for the Scientist, have some laptop time, some Chittu time, some newspaper time and also time for a longish shower if I'm in the mood.

I do wake up at that hour most days just so that I can reap the benefit of having a productive morning. But there certainly are days like today where I turn of the alarm, cuddle up next to the Scientist and wake up an hour later, almost always feeling terrible about it. While I don't mind compromising other things, I like to have have my workout s done and over with in the morning.

So after the Scientist left to work, I got dressed in tracks and went to the gym.

Random thoughts that crossed my mind as I stamped away 430 calories on the RFX:

  • Gosh, I hate the crowded gym. I should come in early so that I can get the machine of choice without having to wait.
  • One day of eating refined carbohydrate showed a weight gain of 1 kg. Overnight! Like how?????
  • And therefore this: I must have eaten rice almost every single day of my 28 years on this earth. Then why-oh-why can I not stay away from it, especially when it shows me so much negative love on the scale?
  • God! That woman there looks so much thinner now than when I last saw her! (which was more than a month ago.. and I know she is a gym regular.. the hard work is showing!)
  • Should I engage a personal trainer? It costs me about Rs.6000/- a month! Gulp! Yes, dearies, INR 6000! Or I should I but a book like the fit female body breakthrough or the New Rules of Weight Lifting for women? Weight training really did wonders to my body!
  • Ok today I will stay away from the refined carbs. I must get on with this weight loss thing. Or how about phase 1 SBD? Its painful, but it works! Maybe I should. How about from Sunday?
  • Am I the fattest here today? Oh look at her? Am I fatter than her? Umm.. i don't know!
  • But I'm fit. Look at me, everybody, this fat girl is going to run a 10 k tomorrow!
  • But I don't look so fat ya..Or is this a kind mirror? May be my bones are heavy? Right?
  • Wow this exercise makes my body feel so good!!!I must fit in more exercise. What good is 30 mins?
  • And stretching.. wow that knee pain from the 7k is almost gone. And my joints feel so well oiled!
Sorry.. I know these were just random. But its true. I love my gym time. I know, I know I say it too often. But its good yo.. really good.

And one final thought as I was parking my bike at home:

Am I going to die fat? I realy wish I wouldn't!

My story so far - A peek into the past!

There was this phase of my life when my personal life was just being blasted in front of my eyes. I went through a patch of emotional tumult that well, I just did not have the age, maturity or good sense to handle. There were agitated conversations. There were tears, too much in fact and a lot of sadness. Things were a complete mess for about a year. That was the year when my weight went from the early 70s to the 80s.

I always had a huge complex about my weight. My father made me even more sensitive about it, and I hated my body. In order to deal with the mess I was going through I'd buy bars of chocolate on my way back from work. Since I'd be unable to sleep well at night, I'd wake up, eat an entire bar of candy (my favourite was the large five star chuncky, then) and then go back to sleep. It became a habit, and soon, I was getting new clothes made, as the old ones did not fit.

I'd meet a specific friend to discuss my sore life. We'd meet at fast food joints, coffee shops and restaurants and ordered anything we fancied. One thing was that my life sucked, so I convinced myself that I could eat good tasting food, as that was the only good part of my day. Another thing was that I had just begun a job and had my own money to spend. No questions asked! So I would merrily eat a double cheese burger and a chocolate shake and go back home to dinner.

While I  always was on the heavier side of life and on a perpetual mission to lose weight. I thought the only way to lose weight was to eat less. So I'd begin with eating less, sustain it for a few days, binge eat and then blow it up. I have joined several gyms in my lifetime and run at several parks. However, it is only this attempt that made me lose 20+ kilos. Why?

First of all, my dual leg fracture scared the living daylights out of me. The pain from my fractures and caesarean section was unnoticeable to me. I was cringing that I was so heavy, in bed and dependent on others for basic needs.  The thought of having someone to assist me in doing basic things of life embarassed me so much. I also had a new born baby to care for.  I decided I had to be lighter just to be easy on myself. Just to prove to myself that my weight does not make me a worse person than I am.

Once I was able to move again, I bought a simple home elliptical. I also read about the South Beach Diet. I also understood that "dieting" is not a temporary thing. I needed to make a lifestyle change. Gradually weight loss occured. I went from a 100.8 kgs to about 78 kgs, now. My goal weight is 67 kgs. Once I get there I will reevaluate if I am ready for more weight loss.

A huge NSV (non scale victory) for me would be to cut the association of emotions with food) I am at work on that part. Many times I display great control. Sometimes, I give in. But what I would call as progress right now, is my ability to step aside for a minute, take a look at what I'm doing and decide if I'm doing good. The blog gives me good accountability. I put my story here just so I can reach out to those who need that spark of ignition.

Thats my story so far. Whats yours?

Low Carbing for me, a recipe without a picture and some tough resolve!

Wow!! The week has gone by pretty fast. Evening showers in Bangalore have made the evenings cool and breezy and I find it easy to plan dinner. During the colder months, I easily resort to soup for dinner with a side of veggies/ lentil creps/ fruit. During the hot summer, I find it very hard to find cool eating options for me. I'm not one to be too excited by raw vegetable, and therefore cold soups do not make a personal favourite.

I'd love to have put up a picture of my dinner here, because that was how it was perfect, yummy and filling.

Carrot soup with Rajma (kidney beans) & Paneer:

You will need :
about 3 mediumsized carrots
one onion
oil
panner 25-30 gms
cooked rajma beans - a handful
milk 150 ml
Salt to taste
Spices as your preference

Slice the onion length wise and saute in a few drops of oil until translucent. Meanwhile peel and chop the carrots into rings. Add the crrots and saute. Once combined well, add a cup of water and let it cook a while. Alternately, you may also pressure cook the onion carrot mixture.

Once well cooked, let it cool. Then transfer to a mixie/blender and blend to desired consistency. You will be presented with a charming orange puree. Transfer back to stove top. Add the milk, then salt and spices. Your carrot soup is ready. I added a bit of cornstarch to the soup as my soup had got a bit watery.

Since, I love one dish meals, I added some sauteed rajma beans and paneer to give my soup a protein fix. I garnished with some freshly ground pepper, red chilli flakes (for I am a lover of spicy food) cumin powder and oregano.

If only I had a picture! Next time, I promise. Even little Chittu loved it.

In other news, I have avoided the mid night snacking bug primarily because my pantry has no tempting food AT ALL. I am also working on limiting refined carbohyfrate intake. Eating refined carbs in moderation simply does not help in weight loss, for me. I did cut myself some slack and loosened my eating rules a bit. But time to bring back the time defined goal into focus. I really want to make it to goal. And there is no easy way up the mountain!

Delayed Whirwind weekend and Other updates

Sorry guys! I know its too late, but better late than never, right?

The last weekend, was a complete whirlwind. We made a dashing visit to Chennai and back. It's ringing weding bells in our family, and I'm so excited.

Therefore there is so much motivation for me to shed some more weight. I have been maintaining for a while now, and it's mostly because of my eating ways. I must bite the bullet soon! Sometimes it stresses me out to think that I have 12 kgs to go to reach goal weight. I was supposed to achieve that by August this year. 12 kgs in four months does not sound difficult, but given the plateau I have been maintaining, I wonder how much more time this is going to take me. Sigh!

Back to happy stuff, this weekend, also saw me on the road to recovery and my stomach and back have return to their usual forgiving selves :)

Although there was no workout during the weekend, I was glad that I was feeling better. Energy levels have returned, and I should be getting back to my exercise regimen soon! Food front, I was kind to my stomach after the tumult it was going through and fed it very often to ensure acidity was at bay.

Healthy eating has resumed, and I am enforcing portion control. I do eat rice/ wheat/ brown bread in small quantities, and honestly, I wonder if this will slow down weight loss for me. Initially, when I started losing weight, I tried to follow the South Beach Diet, and lost a good lot of weight on phase 1. I have lately not been able to follow the stringent phase 1, though I know it works marvels on my body! Reading stuff on the internet also makes me wonder whether I am insulin resistent, as I seem to have all the indications of that. However, I shall resort to it, if I don't see results even after curbing my unhealthy snacking habits. Snacking has been fairly under control, and that is mainly because my pantry has almost nothing I am tempted to snack on!

Anyhow, I don't want to turn this into a disjoint rambling post, and will culminate by saying that week 1 has been good so far as May's goals.

How is your May coming along? Do leave me a line?

The weekly work out round up and the Recipe promise

Yes! I am doing it again. Partly because of some great encouragement from fellow bloggers and weight loss bloggers, and also because it reinforces the weight loss mind frame even during the weekend, when a Pizza for dinner plan sounds so enticing!

So here goes:
Monday - strength training for lower body
Tuesday - Cardio day - 30 mins on elliptical and 10 mins on cycle
Wednesday - took off
Thursday - strength training upper body
Friday - cardio day - 30 mins on elliptical & ran 2 kms on the treadmill non-stop
Saturday - gym closed for maintenance

Last night my dinner looked like this :

The brownish green thing is some sauteed mixed veggies topped with low fat feta cheese. Then there is a red pear and a glass of cold milk with sugar free chocolate hershey's. Perfect dinner, for a hot summer night. Are my Indian readers wondering where I get this stuff from? Please see here.

Here is the recipe for the sauteed veggies (SBD Phase 1 friendly):

You will need:
1 teaspoon cold pressed seasame oil
10 button mushrooms sliced thin
1 zucchini sliced thin
quarter bunch of spring onions
2 tomatoes
2 teaspoons feta cheese for topping

Heat the oil in the skillet
Add the spring onions and saute. Once slightly cooked, add diced tomatoes. saute until cooked and mushy. Then add zucchini and finally mushrooms, because nushrooms cook very fast. Season with your choice. I used some thyme and red chilli flakes. And then finally top with crumbled feta.

That will make two servings. About 130 calories.

Ok, I know I am a bad picture taker and food blogger and recipe writer. But I will improve with time, I promise. And I this the best I can do right now, with all the time that I have. Please leave a comment giving me your feed back. That motivates me so much!!!

Alright, tomorrow is going to be an early mornign as I am going to head to the gym to make for missed work out today. Weekend update, later!!! I've had a sooper saturday!Watch out!

List 1 - My Support System

It’s less than ten days to the new year. New Year. While I have never written down resolutions before, or atleast as far as my memory goes, I shall do it this time. But that’s another post.

I am more than 15 kgs lighter today, than what I started off the year with. I have lost a total of 18.7 kgs from my highest weight in 2010. And I have reached here by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Yes, I ate many ice creams this year, and stuffed myself with Diwali sweets. But I have also understood how my body functions and how good it feels when I put the muscles to use.

So here is a list of the things that helped me so far on my weight loss journey:

1.    The fact that being obese crippled me. Literally. I just had to get this weight off.
2.    The South Beach Diet way of eating. It teaches me to balance out my meals.
3.    Weighing in almost every day. I now know that if I drink I diet Soda during a movie tonight, I will bloat tomorrow, and the weight will increase. Although, technically what I had was calorie free.
4.    A supportive husband. Things he does – encouraging always, guiding me with the importance of stretches at the end of an intense cardio session, allowing me my “exercise time”, never being embarrassed to take me for a run, never said that I looked ugly when I was fat. He is the singular person, I owe my bit of success to.
5.    Having a home-help to take care of the toddler, and doing sundry home-chores to keep our home neat and tidy. Again this gave me time to exercise, without being worried that the house was in a mess.
6.    Stores like Namdharis, Nilgiris and Jaivik Organic Mall, where I get whole foods, a variety of healthy snacks and get introduced to new veggies and fruits. Seriously, I never thought that I will eat Brussels Sprouts.Ever.
7.    My elliptical machine, which has been the one, singular source of exercise.
8.    Web sites such as Kalyn’s Kitchen which has opened up a world of cooking ideas. I have come to learn that the simple act of roasting vegetables, makes them incredibly tasty.
9.    My South Beach Diet Yahoo group has taught me to be patient during a weight-plateau. I have understood that if I wait and keep at my healthy ways, the weight should go.
10. My wish to get back to Bharatanatyam, my true love.

The list can go on. But these are the defining elements supporting my weight loss journey so far.

Watch out this space for more such “listy” posts.

Some Mommy Babble and Change in Plans

It has been an uneventful Sunday. The Scientist is out of town for a friend's book launch, and I have been home with the toddler, and his baby sitter, Maami. I have not spoken about her much here. Have I?

I got back to work in June, this year. Before I resumed work, the Scientist and I had long winded discussions as to whether to leave the baby at the Creche or have some one at home to take care of him. The Scientist was totally against the Creche. I was open minded. The Scientist has a tendency to be unnervingly calm about these uncertain things. I was working up a a great worry, wndering if time had come to being a stay at home mom. I really did not want to have it that way. Eventually, we launched a search for a "helper" about two months prior to the date I joined work, spreading word to every living being known to us.

Without delving into too much detail, let it be said that we found beloved Maami. Maami, fit the portfolio perfectly. She was middle aged, and had done this kind of job before. The amount  we offered to pay her was acceptable to her. Maami, then came to live with us in our humble two bedroom home about three weeks before I joined work.

Chittu has always been an amiable baby. Atleast till now that is the status. And Maami, was also able to strike a bond wth him. The duo have been getting along well so far. And we have given Maami a raise too.

Only sometimes, I miss my "alone" time. There's someone who is not family in my drawing room all the time. Sometimes, its annoying. There are times, I wish i could just shut myself up. I am like that. I like some quite time.

But Maami reads out books to Chittu. He shows a lot of interest in the books we have bought for him. Sometimes, my heart weeps listening to her english word pronunciation. I fear Chittu will speak like like her. But I know he won't. He will probably go to a fancy English medium school, and make fun of the way I speak english too. We have not had a television at home since we got married. So the child is spared of a lot of visual tamasha from that source. But Maami listens to some ridiculous tamil songs on her mobile phone. My appeals to her are not exactly positively responded to.

But despite all the above, I can leave my baby with her, as I rush to work every morning, with the reassurance that he will be cared for decently. That he will be bathed, clothed and fed, in my absence. That a stray late evening meeting won't give me worries about who will pick the child up from the Creche. I have traded a lot of my personal preferences in return for some peace of mind. And thats the best way things can be, for now.

Updated to add: I am under attack of the rhino virus. But I've got an important week ahead. My fridge is stocked up with good food, and my meal plans/options are written in my head. My weight is not budging AT ALL. I'm going back to South Beach Diet, Phase I, just to shake things up a bit. Will keep you posted about the progress if any.

For new readers, let me recapitulate my weight loss story: 17 kgs lost in 15 months and 17 more to go. Am supposed to reached goal weight, by my birthday in August 2012, when I will be turning five years younger.

Love.

Stuck at this weight?

Hi! We are six days into December. I think days have been halved or something!

I have been super busy: sick baby, under the weather me and loads of other stuff. I typed out this post last week (friday), but could not edit and publish:

There are some days I wake up, make tea for the husband and me, play with the fresh-from-bed Chittu, cook breakfast and lunch, pack the husband’s lunch, turn the washing machine on, weigh myself, smile at the loss, exercise, shower, dress, have breakfast and get to work. But then I have days like today, when I am recording a gain, despite eating good and exercising, for a week now. I’m distracted all the time -wondering, if I’m going to be stuck at this weight all my life. I want to cry even. Then I read some blogs, like those on my side bar, and pep talk myself ” I’m being good to my body. The weighing scale should catch up.” But still I am hoping to see some light tomorrow.

In the past year or so, I have paid close attention to my body. The South Beach Diet, made me realize that the more sugar I eat, the more I crave for it. The South Beach Diet also taught me that although cooked white rice and  chappatis may have the same amount of carbs, the huge difference for me is that eating white rice, results in a craving for something sweet in about 2-3 hrs from when I ate. Staving off the craving is mighty hard. Especially, since I can even eat plain sugar straight out of the jar. Eating whole wheat flour chappatis, instead does not do that kind of thing to me. Neither does broken wheat (dalia). Unfortunately, neither gives me the satiety that rice gives.

In my weight loss journey, I first cut out the rice entirely, for two weeks that is, as the South Beach Diet mandates. Later I added whole wheat flour/broken wheat into my diet. On days I ate white rice, because I was either lazy to make or feeling too sorry for myself for eating “diet food”, I just ended up feeling really lousy for binging later or have had to try very hard to fight the cravings. So, white rice is not my best friend.

Brown Rice. What is it?

Lately, I have come across brown rice. It basically is unpolished rice.

Where to buy brown rice in Bangalore?
In Bangalore, I bought Organic Brown Rice at Jaivik Mall, Lalbagh Road. Rs. 42/- for a kilogram.

How to cook brown rice?
The way to cook it is that it needs to be soaked in water about half an hour before cooking. Then, cooked the same way you cook white rice. I cook rice in a pressure cook, and that suits the brown rice just fine. One just needs a few tries to settle with the amount of water to cook it in.

How I eat Brown Rice?

Since I am trying to adhere to a south beach diet way of eating, I had it with the rest-of- the-family meal.(Sambhar and plenty of veggies either sautéed or curried). I also reserved a little bit of rice so that I could have my “curd rice”. You know the way with tam-brahms? We love our curd rice! And so, I feel far from deprived. It is filling (because of the high fibre content), and has not caused me any cravings.

So that’s a new food discovery for me. Am looking forward to the week end. I love my mommy time with the little fellow.

Any new food experiences you would like to share?

Edited to add: Weight read 83.9 today. Yay!

Diwali and the Eating Disaster!

Am back after Diwali of 2011. Besides being unable to believe its actually over, I am kind of grateful that the eating rampage I went on has finally come to an end. We were back in town the day before yesterday, and the amount of veggies I have eaten in the last two days put together, has given my digestive system a great relief.

While I did tell and cajole myself a whole lot about how I have eaten plenty of sweets all my life and how hard I worked to reach my Diwali goal weight, and therefore I should really stay away from those sugary atom bombs, all went in vain, and I have regained about two kilos. The only difference this time was that, after having eaten healthy for a consistently long enough period of time, the sweets I ate really made me feel sick. I did not enjoy it, but kind of fell in a compulsive eating trap.

There is no use fretting too much about it or punishing myself for the heinous crime. Hence I will just go back to my healthy eating ways and exercise.

I have been also thinking about keeping a food journal, and know that it will be very useful weight loss tool. Lets make that the goal of November 2011- keeping a food journal.

When I decided to take on a serious weight loss attempt  in September 2010, I chose to follow the South Beach Diet, because it appealed to me, for being able to lose weight while not starving myself. Although the last one year has been rather like a ping pong, I have managed to lose 15 kilos. The South Beach Diet is divided into 3 phases. You can read more about it here. Following the sugar attack I subjected myself to last week, I have restarted phase 1. I have modified the SBD to suit me, which means that basically I have made an Indian vegetarian version out of it. I have tweaked several standard recipes to make them SBD friendly. And I must admit that it has suited me well. I am not a qualified nutritionist or dietician. So I might not be right in what I do. But I can say this Indian vegetarian South Beach Diet way of eating has really helped to work away my sugar cravings, and has taught me to eat healthy. It has done me more good and no harm, and therefore I think I have finally found the diet that works for me.

As for exercise, following the fractured feet, I could not think of running or walking. And so I purchased an Elliptical, that has been a fine investment so far. It gives me luxury of getting a cardio work out at home. So I have no excuse of being not able to get out or hit a gym. With stretches before and after the elliptical work out, I manage to give about 25-30 minutes to moderate aerobic activity atleast 6 days a week. I want to rev it up a bit, but am going to wait for some time until that happens. More about that later.

That apart, I took a week long holiday for Diwali and spent quality time with the Scientist and Chittu, and with all the goodies and festivity, this Diwali was a rocking one!! How did you spend your diwali? Lemme know.
